Clarification to media reports on 'Getting Fit Again: The Short Term Priorities for Restoring Ireland's Competitiveness'

Date: 26 July 2009

The NCC released 'Getting Fit Again: The Short Term Priorities for Restoring Ireland's Competitiveness' on 25 June. The report notes that in addition to increasing Government revenues, targeted cuts in public expenditure will be necessary as part of the process of restoring the public finances. The report offers no recommendations on how this could be achieved. In particular, the NCC does not comment on cutting public sector numbers or reducing pay. The Council is not a forum for the discussion of pay. In terms of addressing the budget deficit, the report does highlight the need to enhance public sector productivity and to prioritise capital investments.
